MAC OSX INTERNET DIAL-UP DOCUMENTATION
PART 1: Configuring the Network Properties
The first thing we need to do when configuring
OSX is to put all the proper network settings into the Network
System Preferences.
Start by clicking on the blue apple logo, located
in the top left hand corner of the screen, where a menu should
appear allowing you to select "System Preferences"
This is illustrated in the picture below:

The system preferences window should appear.
This is illustrated in the picture below.

The next step is to to double click on the "Network"
icon which will bring up the "Network" Control Panel.
This is illustrated in the picture below.

The following instructions are illustrated above:
Select "Automatic" from the Location
drop down menu
If your Macintosh computer has an internal modem, select "Internal Modem" from the Configure drop down menu. If you have an external modem, you should see your modem listed in this menu as well.
Select "Using PPP" from the Configure
drop down menu
Near the "IP Address" heading you
should see the words "Provided by PPP server"
Under the "Domain Name Servers" heading
there is a box where we can type in some server addresses.
Make the box active by clicking inside it with your mouse.
Type "208.243.100.10" into the box and press the Return key.
This will place the cursor on the next line. We then need to type in "140.186.144.11"
Under the Heading "Search Domains" there is a
box where we can type in the search domain. Leave this field blank,
Across the top of the window you will notice
that there are four tabs. These are "TCP/IP", "PPP",
"Proxies" and "Modem". The current active
tab should be "TCP/IP". Switch the active tab to
"PPP" by clicking on it with the mouse button. The
control panel should now show a different set of options that
we can configure. This is illustrated below.

These intructions are illustrated above.
In the "Service Provider" field, type in "MVA.NET"
In the "Telephone Number" field, type in the phone
number we gave you. (usually ends in 6821)
Leave the "Alternate Number" field
blank
In the "Account Name" field, type in your MVA
login name.
In the "Password" field, type in your
password
The "Save password" box will automatically become
ticked when you type in your password.
Leave the rest of the settings as they are and
click the "Save" button, which is located in the
bottom right hand corner of the screen.
We have now finished configuring the Network
System Preferences, we can close this window by clicking on
the red circle located at the top left hand corner of the
window. This circle will have a cross inside it when you mouse
over it. If a window appears, asking you to "Save configuration
changes?", click on the the "Save" button.
PART 2: Dialing up to the Internet
CREATING AN ICON FOR INTERNET CONNECT
Before enterning the next section we need to
clarify some terms.
The "Dock" is the collection of icons
that is displayed in the centre of the screen at the bottom.
It's main function is to display shortcuts to commonly used
applications, as well as icons of applications that are currently
running.
An example of the "Dock" can be seen
below.

The icon located furthest to the left of the
bar is the icon for the "Finder".
Double click on the "Finder" icon
which will open the Finder window.
Across the top of the window there are 4 icons.
These are "Computer", "Home", "Favourites"
and "Applications"
Click on the "Applications" icon. This will bring
up a window listing some of the applications currently installed on your
computer.
In this window you should see the icon for "Internet
Connect".
It is a good idea to add this icon to the "Dock"
so that it can be accessed more quickly in the future. To
add this to the dock, you can place your mouse over the "Internet
Connect" and while holding down the mouse button, drag
it to the "Dock". This will create an icon in the
dock.
The newly created icon should look like the
one below

We no longer need the applications window, which
we can close by clicking on the red circle located at the
top left hand corner of the window. This circle will have
a cross inside it when you mouse over it.
CONNECTING TO MVA.NET
Click on the "Internet Connect" icon
on the "Dock". This will open the Internet Connect
window. This window is illustrated below.

To connect to MVA.NET, click the "Connect" button
with the mouse button. The "Status" section should update you
with the current stage of your connection throughout the dialing process.
Once you are connected, the window will change
to look like the one illustrated below.

Closing the window by clicking on the red circle, located
at the top left hand corner of the window and you are online!
