Microsoft has hidden IE 5's proxy configuration in a non-obvious place. This is what you need to do to configure it to use the autoconfiguration script.

  1. Select Tools/Internet Options/Connections. You can also access the settings via the Control Panel or by right-clicking on the IE icon and selecting Properties.

    IE5 Internet Options screen

  2. Click on the LAN Settings button.
  3. Check the Use automatic configuration script box and enter proxy.mva.net:8080 in the Address box

(NB there is no need to check the Automatically detect settings, Use a proxy server or Bypass proxy server for local addresses boxes)

  4. Click OK and exit the Internet Options configuration.
  5. Restart the browser. It may take a little while to read in the proxy settings.

This method works with Windows 95, 98 and NT4. It probably works with Macs as well.
